Recent research has revealed that Indonesians, despite residing in the largest coal-producing region and being one of the biggest consumers of coal power globally, are increasingly in favor of a rapid phaseout of coal. This support is notably stronger than that in neighboring Singapore and Malaysia, signaling a shift in public attitudes toward the environmental impact of coal. The findings, commissioned by climate campaign group Market Forces, underscore the potential for a significant transformation in Indonesia's energy landscape and a growing consciousness of the environmental impact of coal mining and usage. This shift in attitude could potentially contribute to a shift in policy and investment toward cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.
